Das Leben der Anderen (2006)

Playing on Wednesday, October 29th at 8 pm.

About the movie:

Before the collapse of the Berlin Wall, East Germany’s population was closely monitored by the State Secret Police or Stasi. Only a few citizens above suspicion, like renowned pro-Socialist playwright Georg Dreyman, were permitted to lead private lives. But when a corrupt government official falls for Georg’s stunning actress-girlfriend, Christa, an ambitious Stasi policeman is ordered to bug the writer’s apart-ment to gain incriminating evidence against the rival.

Now, what the officer discovers is about to dramatically change their lives – as well as his – in this seductive political thriller Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) proclaims is „the best kind of movie: one you can’t get out of your head.“

Oktoberfest Review

Oktober 19, 2008

Thank you all for coming over to the Oktoberfest on Friday night!

We sure had a great time, with about 130 guests attending, approximately 100 Bratwürste and 70 Brezeln being eaten, and many people participating in the quizzes and games or cheering for our live band „Arctic Rose“ with the German House’s very own Rebecca Stewart on the bass.

If you couldn’t make it, check out some photos below:

Barfuss (2005)

About the movie:

Nick Keller is a real loser who gets fired from every job he takes, and his new job as janitor in a psychiatric clinic he keeps only a single day. As he leaves the hospital, he is able at the last minute to prevent a young woman from committing suicide  - but with unexpected consequences. The girl Leila secretly follows her savior and turns up on his door-step barefoot and in her night-gown. All of Nick’s attempts to get rid of her are futile – Leila has decided to stay with him forever…

Nick, who never took on any responsibility in his life, and Leila, who sees the world around her with child-like wonder, go on a journey together that will change their lives…

Oktoberfest is coming!

The German House invites you to celebrate Oktoberfest with us on October 17th, 6 – 9 pm, in the Bice House Lounge.

There will be German Food (think Bratwurst, Sauerkraut, Apfelkuchen), German Games, German Music (and Live Music!) and lots of Germans to meet and talk to.

Come on over and have some fun!

Apple Picking!

On a beautiful, sunny Sunday, the German House went on an apple-picking trip to Carter Mountain. Strolling through the rows of apple trees on the slopes of the mountain, we picked our way through the abundance of red, green, and yellow, sweet, sour, and juicy apples, and then indulged in some apple donuts and cider – hm! A perfect way to spend the day!

The state of the Ruhr area in the summer of 1954: After ten years in Soviet captivity, Richard Lubanski returns home and doesn’t understand what the world has come to. His wife Christa has supported the family on her own, and his grown-up kids live their own lives. His youngest, whom he has never seen before, goes crazy about soccer players that Lubanski has never heard of, especially about Helmut „the Boss“ Rahn, a player of the soccer team called Rot-Weiß-Essen.

While Lubanski is desperately struggling to find his place in this strange new world, the world’s best soccer teams compete at the World Cup in Switzerland – and as if by miracle, the German underdogs make it into the final against the Hungarians. The 4th of July in 1954 is going to be the day when every-thing will be decided…
